Hudson Valley drive-in apple picking tradition where guests can park among the rows and tailgate with orchard views.

Masker Orchards in Warwick, New York is the Hudson Valley's iconic 'drive-in' apple picking destination — visitors drive their cars directly into the orchard rows and tailgate among the trees while picking apples, a unique format that distinguishes Masker's from typical pick-your-own operations. Located in the Black Dirt Region of Orange County, NY (about 90 minutes from NYC), the operation runs September-October only, with weekend traffic that fills the orchard with parked vehicles. Masker's allows leashed dogs (rare for u-pick farms) which is a distinctive feature.

What to expect

Drive Route 17A west from Warwick. The orchard entrance is signed. Drive through the gate and follow signs into the orchard rows — park your car among the apple trees. Bring picking bags or buy them at the entrance. Hayrides and a kids' area supplement the picking. Tailgating with food and drink is the cultural norm; Masker's allows it within reason. Pair with the historic Warwick downtown (cute small town) or the Black Dirt Farms onion country.

What to bring

  • Choose a sturdy tote or backpack so you can keep both hands free on ladders.
  • Twist apples upward instead of pulling to protect next week’s crop.
  • Plan for temperature swings on the ridge—layers beat bulky coats.
