Mat-Su Valley u-pick mainstay with glacier views, veggie rows, and fall harvest festivals on Bodenburg Loop.

Pyrah's Pioneer Peak Farm in Palmer, Alaska is the marquee Mat-Su Valley pick-your-own destination — about 45 miles northeast of Anchorage in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley agricultural country — with strawberries (June-July), berries (July-August), pumpkins (September), and the marquee fall harvest festival. The Pyrah family farm has run for multiple generations and is one of the few commercial Alaska pick-your-own operations. Glacier views and the Mat-Su Valley's distinctive 19-hour summer days produce unusual berry and pumpkin sizes. Targets Anchorage families and Mat-Su residents.

What to expect

Drive Highway 1 north from Anchorage to Palmer (about 45 minutes). The farm is signed on Bodenburg Loop. Open Tuesday-Saturday (Closed Sun-Mon). Pick-your-own runs by Alaska season — June-July strawberries, July-August other berries, September pumpkins. The on-site farm store handles produce. Hayrides and field trips. Pair with the Matanuska Glacier (90 minutes east), Hatcher Pass, or the Alaska State Fair (held annually in Palmer in August-September, with the famous giant cabbages and pumpkins).

What to bring

  • Check the farm’s field report before you leave—popular crops can sell out daily.
